Making Time to Sketch
I headed up to my current favourite place in the world again today, the Silla de Filipe II, near El Escorial. The snow had gone, replaced by thick mist and rain. I decided to wait the rain out in the car. No one there, just the sound of the rain on the car roof – wonderful! I sat for an hour looking at the scene above, and decided to sketch it for fun, before finally taking a walk.
Sketching is a really wonderful way of Making Time to Live. You see things really deeply, and become quite relaxed. Check out my book recommendations (“Ben Recommends….”) on our inspiration page if you want to give it a try. I hadn’t drawn a thing since childhood before reading those books a couple of years ago, now I really enjoy it from time to time. I highly recommend it.

Nice shot, Ben. Deciding on what each stroke of your creation should look like is one of those flow moments, isn’t it? So satisfying!
Double whammy, photo and drawing! I will try some raindrop photos. Should be easy to practice here! We are changing the stereotype of sunny Spain, nothing but rain and snow photos lately. Springtime soon.
Brill love the rainy sketch…I love to watch rain running down glass, still or in car,or bus. Makes great patterns; must try sketching!
Thanks Christine, John and Christine for the comments – yes, try sketching, it’s wonderful!
Good call. That looks like a sketch photo to me, too. Thanks for sharing the sketch with us. It reminds me that I have not picked my pencils up since December. Yikes! I guess I better make time to sketch.
Yes, go for it!
