MTTL Asturias Special: Villaviciosa in the rain

export--7

The forecast looked terrible but we still headed off in the car to Villaviciosa. We were given some false hope when during the journey a few clouds parted and the sun briefly shone through. The idea was to show Ben the estuary of Villaviciosa and beautiful beach of Rodiles, may be even a spot of bird watching. In hindsight this was way off the mark!

The rain came down hard, roads flooded and the streets emptied. We sat in a sideria enjoying ‘Menu del Dia’ whilst trying to convince ourselves it would ‘brighten up in a bit’. Fish soup followed by Pote (Asturian bean stew) and then roast lamb (and wine, of course) all went down nicely. Unfortunately the succession of weather forecasts on the bar’s TV proved too alarming and we headed home (after dessert).

You learn to accept the rain in Asturias. Lucky for us, good food and conversation doesn’t require clear blue skies.

However, before all this, we did managed a stroll around the old town and I took this in the Plaza de José Antonio. I was attracted by the shiny wet pavement. I think it lends itself well in black and white.

  1. Lovely picture. I live in Gijón and the road to Villaviciosa is one of my favourites to have a bike ride, come rain or come shine. I dare say you get to the point: once you accept the rain, enjoying food, people and lanscape it’s plain sailing in Asturias.
Hugs from Gijón en Bicicleta. I follow you!
