Rising to the surface

Last Saturday was one of my most memorable wildlife watching moments.  It was unexpected.  It was our usual daily walk from home, along the Río Sella and Río Piloña.  Although we go prepared with camera and binoculars and have regularly seen otters in the past, it had been a long while since the last sighting.

We watched this young European otter for over 2 hours.  At one point, I decided to walk ahead and climbed down the riverbank to waters edge.  I waited, camouflaged by a old willow tree to see if the otter would swim my way … and it did.  For 20 minutes it fished by a small waterfall very close to me.  Quite a moment!

I’ve uploaded a few more photos from that morning to my flickr account.  Hope you like them.
